A Tuesday at Tend

This is a composite of a real resident’s day — details changed for privacy, nothing invented for comfort. This is what we actually do.

7:00 am

Margaret wakes before the alarm. Her companion, Rosa, is already there — has been for ten minutes, sitting quietly with the lamp on low. "Good morning, Margaret." Twice, if needed.

7:30 am

Oatmeal at the right temperature. Brown sugar on the side because she always preferred to add it herself. Rosa notes in the daily log: "Good appetite. Mentioned her garden twice."

9:15 am

Music therapy with James. Today: Patsy Cline. Margaret's foot moves. She doesn't know why, but something in her does. James never calls attention to it.

11:00 am

Her daughter Sarah calls. Rosa stays close. When Margaret says "who is this?" Rosa leans in gently: "It's Sarah, your daughter." The fourth time this morning. It doesn't get easier. It doesn't have to.

1:00 pm

Lunch in the common room. Margaret sits near the window. She watches the birds at the feeder for eleven minutes. No one interrupts her.

3:30 pm

Rest. Rosa checks in at the door without entering. The room is quiet. Outside, the afternoon light is the color of old photographs.

6:00 pm

Dinner. Afterward, Margaret takes Rosa's hand and says something that doesn't quite make sense. Rosa holds her hand anyway. Sometimes sitting quietly is the only kindness left.

"We don’t manufacture warmth for the website. We document what actually happens and let families decide if it’s enough."

— Claudine Okafor, Director of Resident Care

What Families Say

“

My mother didn't know my name the last fourteen months of her life. But she knew Rosa's voice. She'd calm the moment she heard it. That's not something you can train. Tend found people who already had it.

Mother at Tend: 28 months
“

I live in Boston. I was managing my father's care from 3,000 miles away, running on guilt and conference calls. The first time the care coordinator sent me a photo of him laughing at the bird feeder, I sat in my car and cried for twenty minutes. I hadn't seen him laugh in two years.

Priya Venkataraman

Daughter of a resident · Managing care remotely

Father at Tend: 14 months
“

I was the spouse. Nineteen months without a full night of sleep. The night we moved Gerald in, I went home and slept for eleven hours. I still feel guilty about how good that felt. The Tend team told me that's exactly what's supposed to happen.
